Gray’s Retreat

The barn building that contains Gray’s Retreat is most often taken to be one of the rustic barns indigenous to rural California. We used just that as a prototype when designing the structure, but filled the inside with all the comforts available. Sequestered quietly at the very end of the private lane to The Schoolhouse™ compound, the Retreat is designed to celebrate the solitude of its setting. There are nine-foot high French windows and doors that frame the views of the spectacular Point Reyes Peninsula to the west and the sunrise over Elephant Mountain to the east.

The interior is eclectic and comfortable. The long living room has a Franklin fireplace with rocker and couch opposite the coffee table. The other end of the room has an elegant italian leather couch fold-out (very comfortable and solid,) with writing desk and drapes that close it off as a sleeping area at night, separate from the seating area around the fireplace.

A fine library of guides to our beautiful Point Reyes National Seashore and collections of naturalist writings are stocked with the games and puzzles on the bookshelves. Original art by Gray and other local artists exploring the beauty of Point Reyes graces the walls. Amenities include a laundry room and WiFi throughout.

An antique four poster bed looks out to the private morning sun patio and towering Cypress trees beyond through the bedroom french doors. There is room in here for a baby crib.

Two private patios are comfortably furnished for outdoor living. In addition to the west patio off the living room furnished with Adirondac chairs and a dining set for 5, the east patio is off the dining room for ease in grilling and lounging. Guests bask in the sunshine as soon as the sun rises over Elephant Mountain. A massive Monterey Cypress windbreak, planted with the founding of every coastal ranch in the area, has been home to families of re-tailed hawks and great horned owls for generations. The night sky is filled with stars and the soft hooting of the owls.

The western patio off the living room is perfect for a glass of wine in the quiet while watching the sunset over Point Reyes. When the stars come out, guests may gather around the fire in the patio chimenea.

The kitchen is equipped with family cooking gear, cookbooks, a gas range and oven, coffeepot, bean grinder, blender, dishwasher and microwave. Lots of china and glassware stock the cupboards. Double tile counters provide ample room for working and serving. It is the ideal spot for returning after a day’s adventure of gathering from our local oyster farms, wineries, village baker, produce vendors and cheese makers, to indulge in the leisure of cooking and dining together. An equipped picnic basket, beach chairs and barbecue beckon for outdoor adventure. The bath includes a tub and shower.

Although many couples return again and again to Gray’s Retreat as their traditional romantic get-away, it also converts beautifully to a family and friendship retreat house that will sleep 4 with the possible addition of the Shepherd’s Wagon annex for an additional 2 people. Lots of games and puzzles for sharing are stocked in the cabinets. If guests cannot bear to leave the other family member at home, a perfectly behaved pet is allowed – by prior arrangement only – for a $100 fee.

Placed at the foot of the hill, just opposite Gray’s Retreat is the Bocce Ball Court and Spectator’s Bench. The Ball set is available for daytime use. The views of the Pt. Reyes Peninsula and the sunset from there are beautiful.
